I N T R O D U C T I O N
Swimming’s collaboration with sonic artist Dallas Simpson delivers a new and “uniquely immersive” way of experiencing live music.
Binaural recording allows an audience to hear sound as perceived through someone else’s ears in a way that brings the audience closer to the bands music than is possible through conventional performance environments. The sound created by Swimming travels into miniature microphones in Dallas’ ears and from there to the audiences’ headphones in another room. This gives each audience member an unusually intimate connection with the music as they experience the sound exactly as Dallas is hearing it, in true 3D surround sound. Dallas becomes the conduit for the music, choreographing the mix between the instruments and sound in the performance space.
The live set is constantly evolving; drawing on live re-mixes of the bands music, improvisation and elements of Dallas’ own sonic work. During 2012 this unique experience will be travelling to an array of intriguing settings across the world.
B A C K G R O U N D
Swimming and Dallas have been collaborating on a series of live recordings and performances over the last few years. Many of these are available online as videos and in 2011 they produced a short documentary with award-winnig director Simon Ellis called “Swimming:Binaural Beach” which is premiering at Berlin’s Directors Lounge February 2012 and is then travelling the film festival circuit thoughout the year. The band have recorded in various outdoor environments to match the music or the song.
They have also given select live performances to diverse audiences at from cinemas art spaces, festivals and more conventional venues and been invited to give talks on the work at Festivals and seminars across Europe.
